Petunia Pickle Bottom consistently produces high-quality, versatile, and stylish diaper bags and accessories for even the pickiest parents!
The new Boxy Deluxe diaper bag is no exception, offering more space and features than the original Boxy model. We put it through our hands-on testing and evaluated its quality, features, comfort, durability, versatility, and ease of use.
Overall, we came away with a very positive impression. If you're looking for one of the largest and most versatile diaper bags on the market, we think you will love the Boxy Deluxe!
Our Boxy Deluxe Review
Nobody wants to read this entire article to get to the point. You've got way more important things to do!
Here are our findings, right up front. Spoiler alert, we loved the Boxy Deluxe and noticed very little room for improvement.
Here is a summary of what we loved, and some things that could be improved.
✔️ Beautiful style & design.
✔️ High-quality materials.
✔️ Cavernous interior space.
✔️ Zippered main pocket.
✔️ 5 ways to carry.
✔️ Backpack, tote, shoulder modes.
✔️ Trolly slot for luggage.
✔️ Stroller straps.
✔️ Wide adjustability.
✔️ 15 large pockets.
✔️ Insulated bottle pockets.
✔️ Tech/laptop pocket.
✔️ Zippered front pocket.
✔️ Changing station.
✔️ Large & washable changing pad.
✔️ Lightweight but sturdy.
✔️ Water repellent fabric.
✔️ Comfortable carrying.
❌ A bit expensive.
❌ Bottom gets dirty.
That is a very impressive list, definitely earning it a spot on our best diaper bags round-up!
Regarding the expense, this is not entirely surprising: Petunia Pickle Bottom makes premium diaper bags that are very high quality and will last you many years.
While the Boxy Deluxe has four little feet on the bottom, the bottom itself is not firm enough to prevent it from touching the ground and getting dirty. Not a big deal but worth mentioning.
Overall, we think the new Boxy Deluxe is an amazing choice for discerning parents who need space for anything life throws at them, and more!
Feel like an expert on the Boxy Deluxe? You should! But if you're still uncertain, continue reading to see how we reached these conclusions.
First Impressions
To be 100% transparent, Petunia Pickle Bottom sent us a sample Boxy Deluxe diaper bag for testing (thank you!).
That doesn't necessarily bias us; in fact, nearly half of what manufacturers send us does not make it onto our site due to quality concerns.
Based on our research, Petunia Pickle Bottom is headquartered in Minneapolis, MN, but just like the original Boxy model, the Boxy Deluxe is made in China.
The packaging is simple and easy to navigate. The bag is placed in a bag and then boxed. There is no protective cloth bag for storage. This limits the bag's appeal as a gift unless you package/wrap it yourself.
The box weighs about 5 pounds with half of that weight being the bag itself.
Looking closely at the fabrics, stitching, and zippers, everything looks to be high quality:
The stitching is consistent, the zipper is high quality, the vegan leather is soft and supple, and all the fasteners and hardware are lightweight and stylish while maintaining reasonable quality.
The small feet on the bottom of the diaper bag help it stand on its own when filled. However, note that the bottom itself is not firm enough to prevent some fabric from touching the ground while standing.
Comparing the Boxy versus Boxy Deluxe
Several things separate the Boxy and Boxy Deluxe diaper bags, primarily centered around size and features. The primary differences are below:
- The Boxy Deluxe is about 45% larger than the Boxy, coming in at 29 liters of space (the Boxy is 20 liters).
- The Boxy Deluxe is about 6" wider than the Boxy.
- The Boxy Deluxe includes more pockets, including a front zippered pocket.
- The Boxy Deluxe includes a tech/laptop pocket.
- The Boxy Deluxe includes a trolly sleeve.
Outside of those differences, we think the new Boxy Deluxe is very similar in design and styling to the original Boxy diaper bag.
For parents looking for more space than the original Boxy can offer, or those hoping to use it for longer (like weekend) trips, the Boxy Deluxe is the perfect choice
If you're packing for twins, it's a no-brainer.
Ways to Carry the Boxy Deluxe
We've been testing diaper bags for nearly two decades, so we know versatility when we see it!
The Boxy Deluxe was very impressive in this regard: we counted five different ways to bring this diaper bag on your adventures:
- As a backpack, using the backpack straps.
- As a cross-body or shoulder bag, using the shoulder strap.
- As a tote, using the top carry handle.
- On your luggage, using the trolly sleeve.
- On your stroller, using the stroller straps.
As a backpack, the shoulder straps are somewhat narrow but have reasonable padding; it is a hard trade-off between style and comfort, and Petunia Pickle Bottom did a great job perfecting this balance!
Here are the backpack straps:
Notice the wide range of adjustability in the straps, and the convenient strap holders that prevent excess fabric from hanging off the diaper bag.
Here are the stroller straps:
Notice the easy-to-use clips and strong strap fabric.
Another unique way to carry the Boxy Deluxe is the trolly slot:
The trolly slot doubles as a pocket, but once you unzip the bottom you can slide the trolly handle of a suitcase right through.
A must-have for jet-setting parents!
Pockets Galore!
We counted 15 different pockets, inside and out, which makes for some serious packing power and versatility:
- 2 insulated bottle pockets
- 6 large interior pockets.
- 1 front zippered pocket.
- 4 changing station pockets.
- 1 large tech/laptop pocket.
- 1 large rear pocket that doubles as a trolly sleeve when unzipped.
Two on each long side, and one on each short side.
Nicely done!
Here is a close-up of one of the two insulated bottle pockets:
While many diaper bags include two bottle pockets, they also tend to only insulate one of the pockets. Not the Boxy Deluxe!
These insulated pockets do a great job keeping your bottles cold or warm.
Another perk of the Boxy Deluxe is the wide tech/laptop pocket that can fit a huge 17" laptop:
Most people have a 14-15" laptop or iPad, which will easily fit with room to spare (perhaps for your charger).
Overall, the number, size, and versatility of the pockets were excellent. We loved the front zippered pocket, the huge zippered tech pocket, and the cavernous interior.
Filling the Boxy Deluxe
The new Boxy Deluxe diaper bag is huge by any standards, offering nearly 30 liters of space. That translates to nearly 1800 cubic inches or just over 1 cubic foot.
Perfect for parents who tend to over-pack for day trips (guilty as charged!), or longer overnight journeys with your little one.
To demonstrate just how cavernous the Boxy Deluxe really is, we packed up typical baby products that you might bring on a day trip with your baby. This includes:
- Two bottles.
- A tin of baby formula (this could easily be a breast pump)
- Four diapers.
- A full pouch of baby wipes.
- Diaper rash or nipple cream.
- Sunscreen.
- A change of clothes
- Pacifiers.
- A cute teething toy by Miraloop.
Will it fit?
Not surprisingly, this filled up only about 25% of the diaper bag's interior!
Look how much room was left:
We barely scratched the surface of what the Boxy Deluxe can carry.
This means you can easily add a receiving blanket, overnight pajamas, a bedtime book, little toys, a breast pump, and basically anything else your little one might need.
Petunia Pickle Bottom sells convenient packing cubes that can help you organize items in the large interior.
Wearing the Diaper Bag
Given how large the Boxy Deluxe diaper bag is, we were a little concerned that it would be too bulky to comfortably carry, especially for smaller parents.
To test it out, we put it onto a relatively petite mom just over 5 feet tall.
The adjustability was impressive: the backpack straps have a very long range of adjustment and their padding was minimal but comfortable.
The shoulder strap also had very wide adjustability, which helped the bag fit comfortably onto petite, short, tall, skinny, or plus-sized parents alike.
Depending on how much you fill the bag, and how heavy those items are, there is potential for it to get uncomfortable.
That's not unique to this diaper bag, but definitely be careful if you're packing heavier objects (pump with batteries, baby formula, water, etc) and expect to trek longer distances.
For those situations, you might consider a proper hiking backpack.
The Changing Station
One of the features we were most excited to test out, the changing station is truly a... wait for it... game changer!
When you lift the front flap of the bag, you will reveal a zippered fold-down changing station.
Here is what it looks like before you fold it down:
Simply zip down the two side zippers and fold out the changing pad.
The pad itself is impressively large, coming in at about 12" wide and 30" long (great for taller babies).
Conveniently, the pad can be removed (it uses a Velcro attachment) and machine-washed on a gentle cycle. Nice touch!
Another convenience is the four pockets that are revealed when using the changing station, perfectly sized for diapers, baby wipes, and other diaper-changing accessories (pee pads, creams, etc).
Here is what it looks like in action:
A life-saver in questionable bathrooms, we loved everything about the changing station!
Note that if the surface you're working with isn't large enough to fit the diaper bag itself, you can easily remove the changing pad.
Specifications & Dimensions
Below are the basic specifications of the Boxy Deluxe diaper bag, which are definitely impressive, especially in terms of its size and capacity.

Conclusions
In summary, we were very impressed with the new Boxy Deluxe diaper bag by Petunia Pickle Bottom.
It excels relative to the (non-Deluxe) Boxy diaper bag in size and features, and we think it is worth the premium price.
We think the Boxy Deluxe is the perfect choice for parents seeking both style and functionality in their diaper bag.
It quickly became evident that the Boxy Deluxe surpasses expectations with its beautiful design, high-quality materials, and exceptional spaciousness. Its versatility in carrying options, including backpack, tote, and shoulder modes, along with practical features like insulated bottle pockets and a tech/laptop pocket, make it a standout in a densely packed diaper bag market.
While its price point may be considered a bit steep for some, the investment in durability and utility seems well worth it. Despite minor concerns about the bottom getting dirty, the overall performance and utility of the Boxy Deluxe make it a top contender for parents navigating adventures both near and far.
With its ample storage, comfortable carrying options, and convenient changing station, the Boxy Deluxe proves to be the best companion for parents on the go!
