For babies who seem uncomfortable on standard cow's-milk formula, a gentle formula may be worth considering. These formulas typically use partially hydrolyzed proteins and may also reduce lactose or add HMOs, prebiotics, or probiotics to support digestion.

Important: Gentle formulas are not hypoallergenic and may still trigger reactions in babies with cow's-milk protein allergy. We've been reviewing infant formulas for over 15 years, focusing on nutrition, ingredients, safety, preparation, value, acceptance, and tolerance.

The Best Gentle Baby Formulas: Reviewed

1. Bobbie Organic Gentle Infant Formula

Bobbie Organic Gentle earned our top position because it solves one of the central challenges of a gentle formula without making many of the ingredient compromises found in competing products. It uses 100% partially hydrolyzed whey protein, breaking the whey proteins into smaller pieces while retaining lactose as its carbohydrate source. That combination is surprisingly uncommon in the U.S. gentle-formula category.

Bobbie Gentle is also USDA Organic and uses an ingredient profile that looks much more like a premium standard formula than a typical sensitive formula. Organic lactose is followed by organic partially hydrolyzed whey protein, with a vegetable-oil blend based on high-oleic sunflower or safflower, canola, coconut, and linoleic sunflower or safflower oils. It contains no palm oil, corn syrup solids, or maltodextrin, and it avoids soy-derived oils. Bobbie also provides DHA, ARA, iron, choline, inositol, and the complete vitamin and mineral profile required for infant formula.

The carbohydrate choice deserves particular attention. Lactose is the predominant carbohydrate in human milk and is generally well digested by healthy young infants. Many gentle formulas reduce lactose substantially because doing so can be useful for some babies with temporary digestive sensitivity, but reduced lactose is not automatically better. Bobbie's approach is different: instead of modifying both the protein and carbohydrate components, it focuses primarily on hydrolyzing the protein.

We also give Bobbie strong marks for sourcing and certification. In addition to USDA Organic certification, Bobbie has received Clean Label Project recognition, including the Purity Award and Certified Pesticide Free designation. The company emphasizes transparent ingredient sourcing and publishes extensive information about its manufacturing and quality standards. Bobbie is manufactured for the U.S. market and appears on the FDA's list of infant formulas marketed in the United States.

Where Bobbie falls behind some competitors is digestive supplementation. There are no added HMOs, prebiotics, or probiotics comparable to the 2'-FL and B. lactis combination in Good Start or the five-HMO blend in Similac Gentle Comfort. We do not consider those ingredients mandatory for an excellent formula, but parents who place a high value on microbiome-targeted ingredients may prefer one of those alternatives.

Preparation is straightforward (you can see our full Bobbie Gentle Formula review here!), although Bobbie tends to mix best with moderately warm water. Some parents report that aggressively shaking the bottle produces substantial foam, while swirling or preparing the formula slightly in advance can help bubbles settle. We always pay attention to mixing and foaming during our hands-on testing, and encountered no issues.

In terms of safety history, since Bobbie's 2021 relaunch, we found no recall involving their formulas.

The only real drawback is price. Bobbie Gentle is one of the more expensive gentle formulas on our list, typically costing a little over $2 per ounce of powder before subscription or promotional discounts. Families using formula exclusively can therefore spend substantially more with Bobbie than with Good Start or Kirkland.

Overall, Bobbie Organic Gentle is the gentle formula we would choose if ingredient quality were the highest priority and cost were less important. It offers a combination that is remarkably difficult to find elsewhere: organic ingredients, hydrolyzed whey protein, and lactose without corn syrup solids or maltodextrin. Interested? 2. Good Start Dr. Brown's Gentle Pro Infant Formula

Good Start Gentle Pro was the biggest surprise in our research. If Bobbie wins on ingredient simplicity and sourcing, Good Start arguably offers the most complete digestive-support package of any formula in our top five.

The formula uses 100% whey protein that undergoes a two-step partial hydrolysis process, producing smaller protein fragments than those found in a standard intact-protein cow's-milk formula. It then adds two ingredients specifically targeted toward the developing gut: the human milk oligosaccharide 2'-fucosyllactose, or 2'-FL, and the probiotic Bifidobacterium lactis.

HMOs are complex carbohydrates naturally abundant in human milk. Infants generally do not digest them directly; instead, they interact with the intestinal microbiome and other biological systems. Commercially produced HMOs such as 2'-FL do not reproduce the complete HMO diversity of human milk, but they have become increasingly common in premium infant formulas.

The addition of B. lactis makes Gentle Pro especially interesting. Probiotic effects are strain-specific, so simply advertising a product as containing a probiotic is not enough to establish a benefit. Nevertheless, Good Start's combination of hydrolyzed whey, an HMO, and a defined probiotic strain creates a compelling digestive-support package.

Good Start does make more ingredient compromises than Bobbie. Its carbohydrate blend includes both lactose and corn maltodextrin, and its vegetable-oil blend includes palm olein and soy oil. None of those ingredients makes the formula unsafe or nutritionally inadequate, but families specifically looking for an all-lactose formula or trying to avoid palm and soy oils may prefer Bobbie.

Parent sentiment is one of Gentle Pro's strongest advantages. Large retail-review datasets are generally very positive, and we found a lot of independent discussion from parents who reported improvements in gas, stool consistency, constipation, or general comfort after switching to Gentle Pro. It also has a much longer history of use than newer formulas such as Kirkland Gentle or Similac 360 Gentle Comfort. In our own testing, it has easy preparation and excellent acceptance and tolerance.

Good Start has changed branding over the years. The line was previously closely associated with Gerber and is now marketed under Perrigo with Dr. Brown's branding. Parents familiar with older Gerber Good Start GentlePro products may therefore recognize much of the current product despite the newer packaging.

There is one safety-history issue worth explaining. In 2023, Perrigo voluntarily recalled certain lots of Gerber Good Start SoothePro powdered infant formula because of potential Cronobacter sakazakii contamination. The recall involved SoothePro, not GentlePro. We would therefore not describe Gentle Pro itself as recalled, but the event is relevant when evaluating the manufacturer's broader production history.

Price is another major strength. Gentle Pro frequently costs substantially less than Bobbie and Enfamil, particularly in larger containers and warehouse-club packages. That combination of sophisticated digestive ingredients and moderate pricing is the main reason it came extremely close to taking our top spot. 3. Similac 360 Total Care Gentle Comfort

Similac 360 Total Care Gentle Comfort is one of the newest formulas in our rankings, and its biggest strength is immediately obvious: it combines hydrolyzed whey protein with an unusually extensive five-HMO blend.

The formula includes 2'-FL, LNT, 3-FL, 6'-SL, and 3'-SL. Human milk contains a much broader and more individualized HMO profile, so no formula can meaningfully claim to duplicate human milk simply because it contains several HMOs. Still, including five structurally distinct HMOs gives Similac one of the most sophisticated HMO packages in the gentle-formula category.

The formula uses hydrolyzed whey protein and is designed with very low lactose. Corn maltodextrin serves as its primary carbohydrate source, and the current ingredient list also includes sugar. Some parents may prefer Bobbie's simpler lactose-based approach, but the alternative carbohydrate blend is consistent with Similac's goal of producing a reduced-lactose comfort formula.

Similac Gentle Comfort also avoids palm olein oil, which distinguishes it from Good Start and Gentlease. Its fat blend instead relies on other vegetable oils to provide the fatty-acid profile required for infant nutrition.

Another important advantage is format availability. Similac offers Gentle Comfort in convenient ready-to-feed forms in addition to powder. Ready-to-feed formula can be extremely useful during travel, nighttime feedings, daycare, or situations where mixing powdered formula is inconvenient. Liquid ready-to-feed formula is also commercially sterile until opened, whereas powdered infant formula is not sterile.

The primary limitation is that this exact product is relatively new. It replaces or succeeds older Similac comfort formulations, so it does not yet have the decades of product-specific parent experience associated with formulas such as Enfamil Gentlease. Early parent discussions are encouraging, including reports from families whose babies preferred it or tolerated it better than other gentle formulas, but we give those early anecdotes relatively little weight. Our own testing has thus far been very positive.

Abbott's manufacturing history also warrants discussion. In 2022, Abbott recalled numerous powdered infant-formula products manufactured at its Sturgis facility during a major FDA investigation involving Cronobacter. Older Similac comfort products were included within the broader recall environment. The current Similac 360 Total Care Gentle Comfort is a newer formula and was not the product involved in that 2022 event, but parents understandably may still consider Abbott's manufacturing history when choosing a brand.

Pricing is generally midrange to premium, depending heavily on container size and retailer. Warehouse-club pricing can make it substantially more affordable than Bobbie or Enfamil, while smaller retail packages may cost considerably more per ounce. 4. Enfamil NeuroPro Gentlease Infant Formula

Enfamil Gentlease is arguably the formula most parents already recognize in this category. It has been widely used for years, is sold virtually everywhere infant formula is available, and has accumulated an enormous amount of real-world feeding experience.

The current NeuroPro Gentlease uses partially hydrolyzed milk proteins and contains approximately 80% less lactose than standard milk-based Enfamil formulas. Unlike Bobbie and Good Start, which are based on 100% whey protein, Gentlease uses both whey and casein proteins before hydrolysis.

Its digestive and developmental extras are extensive. NeuroPro Gentlease includes the HMO 2'-FL, PDX and GOS prebiotics, DHA, and milk fat globule membrane components. MFGM is a complex membrane naturally surrounding milk-fat droplets and contains proteins, phospholipids, and other bioactive components that have become increasingly common in premium formulas.

The biggest reason Gentlease does not rank higher is its basic carbohydrate and fat profile. Corn syrup solids are its primary carbohydrate source, while the vegetable-oil blend includes palm olein and soy oil. Corn syrup solids used in formula should not be confused with high-fructose corn syrup. They are glucose-based carbohydrates and are commonly used in formulas designed to reduce lactose. Nevertheless, parents who specifically want lactose as the primary carbohydrate have better choices on this list.

Gentlease's biggest real-world advantage is availability. You can find it in grocery stores, pharmacies, big-box retailers, warehouse clubs, and online, and it is sold in several package formats. For a family that travels frequently or does not want to depend on a subscription or a single retailer, that availability matters.

Parent sentiment is predictably mixed simply because so many babies have used the formula. We found large numbers of parents who describe Gentlease as the formula that finally reduced gas, fussiness, or feeding discomfort after unsuccessful trials with other products. We also found recurring complaints involving constipation, spit-up, taste, and odor. That variability is exactly why switching formulas based exclusively on another parent's experience can be frustrating. In our hands-on testing, we found the NeuroPro easy to prepare and that babies showed high tolerance, though acceptance was mixed.

From a safety-history standpoint, Gentlease was not the subject of the major 2022 Abbott recall. However, a 2023 FDA warning letter to Reckitt/Mead Johnson documented manufacturing observations at a facility while Gentlease powder was being filled, including concerns involving accumulated powder and sanitation controls. This was a regulatory warning, not a Gentlease product recall, but we consider manufacturing history relevant when evaluating any formula brand.

What we liked: Long product history, partially hydrolyzed proteins, 2'-FL HMO, dual prebiotics, MFGM components, DHA, multiple package formats, and excellent nationwide availability.

Keep in mind: Corn syrup solids are the primary carbohydrate, contains palm olein and soy oil, relatively high price, and parent tolerance reports vary substantially.

5. Kirkland Signature ProCare Gentle Infant Formula

Kirkland Signature ProCare Gentle is the value sleeper in this comparison. Manufactured by Perrigo for Costco, this newer formula costs dramatically less than Bobbie, Enfamil, and many other name-brand options while still offering a surprisingly sophisticated nutritional profile.

The protein source is 100% partially hydrolyzed whey, putting Kirkland structurally closer to Bobbie and Good Start than to Gentlease. It also contains two HMOs, 2'-FL and LNnT, along with DHA, lutein, and naturally occurring MFGM components.

The fat blend contains no palm olein, another advantage for families trying to avoid it. Kirkland also advertises the formula as non-GMO and carries Kosher Dairy and Halal certifications.

The major compromise is carbohydrate selection. Corn syrup solids provide the formula's carbohydrate source. Again, corn syrup solids are not high-fructose corn syrup and should not be portrayed as a dangerous or nutritionally inappropriate formula ingredient. They are commonly used in gentle and sensitive formulas because they reduce dependence on lactose. Nevertheless, parents prioritizing a lactose-based ingredient profile will strongly prefer Bobbie.

The formula is also very new compared with the other choices on our list. That means there is less long-term parent feedback and less product-specific safety history. Early Reddit discussions are encouraging, particularly among families switching from more expensive gentle formulas such as Gentlease. Several parents report that their babies transitioned with little difficulty while their formula expenses dropped substantially. Other reports mention temporary constipation, additional spit-up, or slower powder dissolution. We are currently undergoing hands-on testing with this Kirkland formula and will update the article once our review is live!

Availability is a mixed blessing. Costco's distribution makes Kirkland extremely convenient for members when it is in stock, but it is not as universally available as Similac or Enfamil. Formula inventory can also vary by warehouse and region, so families should consider whether they can obtain it reliably before making a successful transition.

We found no product-specific recall involving Kirkland ProCare Gentle during our research. However, because the product is relatively new, a short recall-free history should not be interpreted as stronger evidence than a decade or more of trouble-free production. Perrigo also manufactures Good Start products and therefore shares some of the broader manufacturing history discussed in our Good Start review.

The value, however, is exceptional. At approximately 80 cents per ounce of powder during our pricing research, Kirkland can cost less than half as much as some premium alternatives. For exclusively formula-fed babies, that difference can add up to hundreds or even thousands of dollars over the first year.

What we liked: 100% partially hydrolyzed whey, two HMOs, DHA, lutein, MFGM components, no palm olein, excellent certifications, and outstanding value.

Keep in mind: Corn syrup solids are the carbohydrate source, the formula is relatively new, Costco availability can fluctuate, and there is less long-term parent experience than with Gentlease or Good Start.

Gentle Baby Formula Cost Comparison

Cost matters, especially for families exclusively formula feeding. Powder prices vary by retailer, package size, subscription, coupon, and warehouse-club membership, so the numbers below should be treated as approximate comparisons.

The price difference is substantial. Bobbie has our favorite overall ingredient profile, but a family using several cans per month can spend dramatically more than one using Kirkland or Good Start. Formula should ideally be both well tolerated and financially sustainable, so we do not think parents should feel pressured to buy the most expensive product.

Recall and Safety History

Infant-formula safety deserves more attention than marketing claims. We reviewed both product-specific recalls and meaningful manufacturer-level regulatory events. Importantly, a recall involving one formula should not automatically be described as a recall of every formula made by that company.

Recall history should always be interpreted in context. A company that has manufactured billions of formula servings over decades has had more opportunities for a recall than a brand-new product. We therefore consider the severity and relevance of the event, corrective actions, current regulatory status, and manufacturing transparency.

Understanding Gentle Baby Formula

The word gentle is primarily a marketing category. Different brands use somewhat different strategies, but most formulas on this list modify one or more of three things: protein structure, carbohydrate composition, and digestive-support ingredients.

Partially Hydrolyzed Proteins

Cow's-milk proteins in a standard formula are generally intact. Hydrolysis uses enzymes to break those proteins into smaller peptide fragments. A partially hydrolyzed formula breaks the proteins down to some degree while still leaving peptides large enough to potentially trigger an allergic reaction.

Research suggests that some partially hydrolyzed formulas can support normal growth and may produce softer stools or improve certain measures of gastrointestinal tolerance compared with intact-protein formulas. However, results vary among products and infants, and partially hydrolyzed formula should not be considered a treatment for every type of gas, reflux, colic, or fussiness.

Most importantly, partially hydrolyzed formula is not hypoallergenic. Babies with diagnosed or strongly suspected cow's-milk protein allergy may require an extensively hydrolyzed or amino-acid formula under medical guidance.

Lactose, Corn Syrup Solids, and Maltodextrin

Lactose is the predominant carbohydrate in human milk, which is why we generally prefer it in routine milk-based formulas when appropriate. Bobbie Gentle is particularly unusual because it retains lactose while using completely partially hydrolyzed whey protein.

Many gentle formulas instead reduce lactose and replace some or all of it with carbohydrates such as corn syrup solids or maltodextrin. That does not mean those formulas contain high-fructose corn syrup. Corn syrup solids used in infant formula are primarily glucose-based carbohydrates and are different from high-fructose corn syrup.

Reducing lactose can be useful in certain circumstances, particularly after gastrointestinal illness when temporary secondary lactase deficiency can occur. However, true congenital lactose intolerance is extremely rare, and most healthy young infants are biologically equipped to digest lactose.

For that reason, we view reduced lactose as a formulation strategy; we don't automatically award points for having less lactose.

HMOs, Prebiotics, and Probiotics

Human milk oligosaccharides, or HMOs, are complex carbohydrates found naturally in human milk. More than a hundred HMO structures have been identified, and their concentration varies among mothers and across lactation.

Formula manufacturers can now produce several individual HMOs, including 2'-FL, LNnT, LNT, 3-FL, 3'-SL, and 6'-SL. Similac Gentle Comfort currently offers the most extensive HMO blend among our five finalists, while Kirkland contains two HMOs and Good Start and Gentlease include 2'-FL.

HMOs are promising ingredients, but counting them should not become a simplistic scorecard. A formula containing five HMOs is not equivalent to human milk, and there is not enough evidence to conclude that five is necessarily better than two for every healthy infant.
